Item A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON UNDERSTANDING FEAR AND APPREHENSIONS EXPERIENCED BY WOMEN WITH MISCARRIAGES(0021-06-12) AIMAN ZAHIDABSTRACT Pregnancy is an important life experience, and the loss of a pregnancy can have negative psychological consequences. Despite advances in our understanding of grieving following perinatal loss, there has been relatively little research particularly addressing bereavement following miscarriages. The goal of this study was to learn more about a group of Pakistani women's miscarriage experience. Semi-structured interviews with 3 women who had miscarriages, were used to use an interpretive phenomenology technique. In depth interviews and stories helped to gain a better understanding on the care that women received in the hospital. The data was analysed and interpreted using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Women's miscarriage experiences are characterised by a loss of hope. Three themes were explored in this study: 1) Dealing with the loss of hope, 2) regaining emotional equilibrium, and 3) recognising the need for intervention. Miscarriage is an inevitable event that has to be addressed right away. According to the findings, women gain from support from their husband, family, friends, and health care providers during and after a miscarriage. This study emphasizes the problems that women face as a result of miscarriage. Health practitioners must provide greater in-depth information and empathic treatment to women. The need of better understanding the emotional affects, behaviors, and coping techniques that women find to be significant in the field of social work is important because of the widespread nature of miscarriage. Professionals in the medical field must be trained to provide emotionally sympathetic treatment to these women.Item ALEXITHYMIA, MOBILE PHONE ADDICTION AND QUALITY OF SLEEP AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-18) FATIMA SAJJADThe present study examined the relationship of alexithymia, mobile phone addiction and quality of sleep among university students. Using correlational research design, a sample of 300 male and female university students (F= 180; M=120) was approached through purposive sampling strategy. Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Mobile Phone Addiction Scale- Short Version and Sleep Quality Scale were used for the assessment. The statistical software SPSS was used for data analysis on the dataset collected for the study. Reliability analysis, Correlational analysis, Regression analysis, and Independent t-test was done. The results showed that alexithymia and mobile phone addiction were positively correlated with the quality of sleep in the sample. Smartphone addiction and alexithymia emerged as significant positive predictor quality of sleep among university students. However, females have reported high alexithymia and have reduced quality of sleep than males while gender differences are not significant in terms of mobile phone addiction. These results highlight the significance of impact of alexithymia and mobile phone addiction on the quality of sleep in the students of university. These findings have clear implication as it is beneficial to consider alexithymia and smartphone addiction when addressing issues on the quality of sleep.Item ATTACHMENT STYLES, COPING STRATEGIES, AND PERCEIVED STRESS IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS(0021-06-12) SYEDA KHADEEJA IMRANThis study aimed at examining the relationship between attachment styles, coping strategies, and perceived stress in university students. It also aimed to understand the role of attachment styles and coping strategies as predictors of perceived stress in university students. A sample of undergraduate university students (N=200) between the ages of 19 and 24 (M = 1.35, SD = .48) was taken from HEC-recognized universities in Lahore. All participants completed Adult Attachment Scale (Collins & Read, 1990), Brief-Cope (Carver, 1997), and Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, 1994). Results showed a significant positive relationship between anxiety attachment and perceived stress. It also stated that coping strategies such as self-distraction, denial, emotional support, instrumental support, behavioral disengagement, and self-blame also have a positive correlation with perceived stress. The results also stated that close attachment was a predictor of perceived stress. Coping strategies such as religion, acceptance, active coping, and behavioral disengagement also predicted perceived stress among university students. Significant gender differences were there in close and dependent attachment styles among university students. Males had a more close and dependent attachment style than females.Item ATTACHMENT STYLES, EXPERIENTIAL AVOIDANCE AND PROBLEMATIC PORNOGRAPHY VIEWING AMONG UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-05-18) AYESHA NOORProblematic pornography viewing (PPV) refers to the addictive nature of pornography, which include the consumption of porn in inappropriate settings (such as the workplace), the interpersonal problems associated with porn, and the dysfunctional use of porn to manage one's emotions (Grubbs et al., 2018). This study aims to find out correlates and predictors of PPV as well as gender differences in PPV among undergraduate university students. Correlational research design was used and by purposive sampling strategy data was collected from 160 undergraduate university students (Mage= 21.09, SD= 1.48) from different private universities of Lahore. The scales which were used in this study are Revised Adult Attachment scale-Close Relationship Version (Collins, 1996), Brief Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire (Gámez et al., 2014) and Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale (Bőthe et al., 2017). Results showed significant positive relationship of insecure attachment styles and experiential avoidance with PPV. Regression analysis found that attachment anxiety turned out to be a significant positive predictor of PPV. The independent t-test analysis found that males were more likely to experience experiential avoidance and engage in PPV behavior compared to females. The findings of the study would contribute to indigenous literature and be helpful for mental health practitioners treating individuals suffering from PPV behaviorItem BLESSING OR A CHALLENGE RAISING A DOWN SYNDROME CHILD; A NARRATIVE INQUIRY(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-18) AMINA SALMANFamilies raising children with Down syndrome go through many unique and complicated challenges at every level of the child’s life, including social, physical, emotional and behavioural domains. However, research also highlights some positive facets of Down syndrome like increased empathy and stable family relationships. The current research aimed to address and explore all the aspects accompanying Down syndrome including physical, social, psychological and spiritual. It also aims to identify factors that contribute to post traumatic growth. The qualitative research design and narrative inquiry was used to explore these areas. Snow-ball sampling was used to recruit three mothers of Down syndrome children. The sample included two twelve year old boys and one twelve year old girl respectively. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with mothers (two interviews were taken in person while one was taken online) and observations sessions were scheduled in the child’s natural environment. The data was transcribed and analysed through thematic narrative analysis. Seven major themes were extracted from the narratives; Receiving and dealing with the diagnosis, lifestyle and well-being, challenges of raising a Down syndrome child, child attachment and relationship with family members, child development and skills, factors leading to Post-traumatic growth and unique relation of the child with God. The research concluded that where the positive aspects of raising a Down syndrome child outnumber the negative aspects in theory, in practical life, this syndrome is definitely a very intense challenge for parents, and when compared to other severe disorders and syndromes, it comes along with a bunch of sparkles. Findings can help in reducing societal stigma, help health care providers design interventions and enhance well-being and support for individuals with Down syndrome and their family members. It is recommended to further explore the Down syndrome child’s connectednessItem CHILDHOOD TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE SELF ESTEEM AND EMTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG ADULTS(0021-06-12) RIDA PERVAIZ SARDARThe purpose of the study is to identify the psychological, behavioral, emotional and physical change that occurs in children with childhood traumatic experiences and how it affects emotional intelligence and self esteem. Violence and abuse victims do not inflict the violence on themselves, they do not necessarily lack confidence, and they are not equally abusive as the abuser. Sexual, physical, or emotional abuse in relationships happens when one person believes they have more authority and power over their partner and decides to use abuse to acquire and keep that control. Abuse causes disruptions in emotion regulation of adult’s emotions. The emotions researcher addresses in this research are Impulsiveness, low self esteem and low assertiveness This research was conducted with a prominent objective of improving and highlighting the societal and mental problems that are faced by abused victims living in Pakistan. The study uses quantitative research to check the relationship between childhood trauma and emotional affect of the trauma on the abused victim, their mental well-being, self-esteem and moral development. Such individuals turn out to be impulsive, low self esteem which affect their adult relationships. The results of this study revealed that there is negative correlation between childhood experience and self-esteem. Additionally, this study's findings indicate a favorable relationship between emotional intelligence and self-esteem.. Lastly, the findings suggest that childhood trauma positively predicts affect on emotion intelligence.Item EFFECTIVENESS OF PROBLEM-SOLVING THERAPY TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12) FIZA AMJADItem EMOTIONAL REGULATION, MINDFULNESS AND BURNOUT AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12) NOOR ANJUM AYESHAM BUTTThis correlational study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between emotional regulation, mindfulness and burnout in MBBS students who are in final year. Academically, the teachers had effect on their grades and interest level in class. Positive relationships had positive influence and negative relationship had a negative impact. Emotionally, the students experienced a variety of emotions due to their relationship with their teachers. Some teachers had a positive influence on the emotions and emotional well-being of the students while some gave rise to unpleasant feelings. Career wise the teachers were seen as guiders and mentors for the students who helped them set their career paths. Unfortunately, the negative experiences of a few participants had a huge impact on their career development and made them loose interest in their degree and professional field. Socially, the teachers had an effect on the students’ adjustment in their class and socialisation with peers. The teachers had both positive and negative influence on the personality of the students. The study concludes that student teacher relationship is important and it influences the student in different ways and aspectsItem IDENTITY FORMATION IN YOUNG GAY MEN: A NARRATIVE INQUIR(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-18) AYESHA RAISexual minorities in Pakistan are largely ignored in research fields. This study aimed to fill this gap by focusing on the narratives of young gay men in Pakistan regarding their identity formation. Qualitative research design and narrative research paradigms were adopted to maintain the integrity of the participants’ own voice. For this purpose, snowball sampling was conducted in Lahore, Pakistan and in depth, unstructured interviews were taken from the four participants. The resulting data was analyzed using thematic narrative analysis and yielded the themes of (a) initial development of identity (sexual assault, gender identity crisis, religious identity crisis, queer trauma), (b) societal implications on identity (sexism, the heteronormative default, sexual and romantic challenges, western queerness) and (c) recognition and integration of identity (I contain multitudes) regarding the identity formation of the young gay men. All these factors and experiences played into their sense of self and the narratives they provided regarding their identity formation. Identity formation is a tumultuous journey for all youths but this is made more difficult for young gay men because of the lack of social support systems in the community. Social awareness and education can provide aid in this regard. More research is required in this aspect for sexual minorities in Pakistan for ignoring someone’s existence does not make them vanish.Item Interparental Conflict, Social Anxiety & Psychological Wellbeing among Young Adults(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12) FATIMA AFTABExposure to interparental conflict makes young adults more vulnerable to developing social anxiety and having reduced psychological wellbeing. The participants completed measures of Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict (CPIC), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and Psychological Wellbeing Scale (PWB) presented by Carol Ryff. The results of this research suggest that interparental conflict has a significant impact on the social anxiety and psychological wellbeing of young adults. Young adults show a marked increase in social anxiety when exposed to interparental conflict.Item KANZA CHAUDHARY(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12)This study aimed to examine the relationship of negative life events, positive and negative affect and resilience in older adults. It was hypothesized that positive affect and/or negative affect is likely to mediate the relationship between negative life events and resilience. A sample of 103 older adults (calculated by G-Power Analysis) (MA= 67.74; SD= 7.22) comprising of both males and females was obtained from Lahore, Pakistan, through purposeful convenience sampling. In order to gather data, Geriatric Adverse Life Events Scale (GALES; Devanand et al., 2002), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson & Clark, 1988), Brief Resilience Scale (BRS; Smith et al., 2008) and demographic form were administered. Cross-sectional research design was employed. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship of resilience with negative life events and positive and negative affect. According to the parallel mediation model, the affects, positive and negative do not significantly explain the relationship between negative life events and resilience. Moreover, gender differences revealed higher scores of negative affect in females as compared to males while males scored higher on resilience than females. This study has important findings that have implications in research as well as practice to place importance on the mental health and well-being of older individuals, especially due the higher frequency of reported negative events in old age. Future researches may need to focus on other factors that tend to play a more significant role in enhancing resilience in the face of adversity of negative life events factors other than affect to help older adults to cope and adapt to their
