This study aims to highlight how the psychosocial factors affect body image and shape one’s perception. Purposive sampling strategy was used to collect data from a sample of 4 female participants aged 18-25 who had normal BMI ranges. An interview guide was developed using Urdu and English languages with probes to guarantee in-depth knowledge and understanding of the what role these factors play and what other factors are involved. Feasibility of the data was increased by conducting a pilot study prior to conducting the main research. Semi structured interviews following a consent form from the participants were conducted for data collection. The data was analyzed using six step thematic analysis by Braun and Clark (2006). Four major themes were identified namely “perceived body issues” which had the subthemes of physical features, weight concerns, menstrual issues and aesthetic surgeries. The second theme “preferred treatments” include aesthetic surgeries. Third theme “sociocultural influences” focused on external pressure, reassurances from men, traumatic experiences and type of education. Lastly, the fourth theme i.e., “cognitive perspectives” highlighted the role of self-esteem, low self-expectations and coping strategies. The finding emphasized on the effects of psychosocial factors and the role of any new factors on the one’s perception. Certain new factors were also highlighted. This research was supported by empirical evidence provided by the preexisting literature. The strengths, limitations and future implications have also been studied. Key words: body image, qualitative study, coping strategies, self-esteemItem MENTAL HEALTH OF WOMEN IN OLD AGE HOMES; A NARRATIVE INQUIRY(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12) SHANZEY KHANOld home living has become quite prevalent in Pakistan in recent years. But living in a facility is still different from living at home. Being separated from family and other social responsibilities must have a psychological impact on the residents of old age homes. This narrative inquiry was conducted to shed light on the impact living at an old age home has on the psychological state of women. This research was conducted using an interpretivist paradigm which is a part of the philosophical assumption. Purposeful sampling method was used and five women in two separate old age homes in Lahore were interviewed. After conducting the interviews, the recurrent themes were "Health-related concerns", "adverse life events", "challenges" and "coping mechanisms". These women had decided to live here on their own due to a lack of financial security and emotional instability in their homes. The participants ranged from ages 60 to 75 years and had been living in these homes for over two months to 8 years. A lot of them had troubled marriages due to being married at a very early age, were ignored by their children, and were cast out by their families. All this led to them battling depression and anxiety along with medical issues that come with old age like high blood pressure and diabetes. Having led very tough lives navigating through a male-dominated society as an alone woman they had developed certain coping mechanisms to stay afloat. Some were healthy and some led to negative results like denial, depleted self-esteem, and self-blaming. Lack of sociability with other residents and family members leads to them feeling isolated and abandoned due to which hopelessness was greatly observed. This all leads to bitterness, negativity, and toxicity becoming an avid part of their personalities. This research intends to highlight the mental health of these women and in turn, spread awareness about the importance of the psychological health of the female residents of old age homes in Pakistan. Keywords: Psychological impact, emotional instability, medical issues, isolated, Coping Mechanisms.Item FACTORS FOR LATE INITIATION OF ANTENATAL CARE(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-18) SERENE ZEHRAAntenatal care is the type of care that is given by a healthcare professional/worker to a woman during her pregnancy period. A sample of 150 final year medical students calculated through G-Power Analysis was taken. This study was conducted on both male and female medical students, studying in their final year of MBBS. The data was gathered from government and private medical universities of Lahore city through purposive sampling. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire ERQ (Gross & John, 2003), The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale MAAS (Brown & Ryan, 2003), and The Oldenburg burnout inventory scale (Demerouti et al, 2010) were administered. For data analysis, we used the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The reliability analysis of measuring instruments was analyzed that are used in the research. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to look at the relationship between medical student burnout, mindfulness, and emotional control. Male and female differences were determined using the independent T test. Additionally, multiple hierarchical linear regression was used to determine the factors that predict burnout in medical students. The questionnaires were filled by participants in-person from different medical universities. Participants were given an information sheet, consent form and demographic sheet along with questionnaires. According to study, around 40.7% were male and 59.3% were female. Most of the participants i.e 90% were single. Internal consistency of the scales were checked by seeing values of cronbach alpha of the subscales of three scales. The aim of the current study was to examinethe relationship between emotional regulation and mindfulness on medical students' level of burnout.Item KANZA CHAUDHARY(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12)This study aimed to examine the relationship of negative life events, positive and negative affect and resilience in older adults. It was hypothesized that positive affect and/or negative affect is likely to mediate the relationship between negative life events and resilience. A sample of 103 older adults (calculated by G-Power Analysis) (MA= 67.74; SD= 7.22) comprising of both males and females was obtained from Lahore, Pakistan, through purposeful convenience sampling. In order to gather data, Geriatric Adverse Life Events Scale (GALES; Devanand et al., 2002), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson & Clark, 1988), Brief Resilience Scale (BRS; Smith et al., 2008) and demographic form were administered. Cross-sectional research design was employed. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship of resilience with negative life events and positive and negative affect. According to the parallel mediation model, the affects, positive and negative do not significantly explain the relationship between negative life events and resilience. Moreover, gender differences revealed higher scores of negative affect in females as compared to males while males scored higher on resilience than females. This study has important findings that have implications in research as well as practice to place importance on the mental health and well-being of older individuals, especially due the higher frequency of reported negative events in old age. Future researches may need to focus on other factors that tend to play a more significant role in enhancing resilience in the face of adversity of negative life events factors other than affect to help older adults to cope and adapt to theirItem FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENT, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND SUBJECTIVE WELL BEING OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WITH MIGRAINE(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-12) JABAL-E-NOORThe main aim of this study was to explore the impact of functional impairment and academic performance on the subjective well-being of university students with migraine. 75 university students diagnosed with migraine with the age range of 18-28 years were recruited for the study. In these 75 participants 18 were males and 57 were females and all belonged from different universities of Pakistan. Firstly, the participants were asked to fill the Migraine Screening Questionnaire and once they fulfilled the criteria, then they were selected for the study. Academic performance was measured through Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the students. For functional impairment and Subjective well-being, Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale (WFIRS) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were used respectively. The results indicated that multiple dimensions of functional impairment have a significant, negative relationship with subjective wellbeing of university students. However, academic performance of university students does not a significantly correlate with their subjective well-being. Results further showed that Functional impairment emerged as significant predictor of the later well-being of students explaining that impairments in the domain of self-concept predicts the overall life satisfaction and subjective well-being of university students. Strengths, limitations, implications and future recommendations are discussedItem EXPLORING THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF YOUNG ADULTS AFTER DEATH OF MOTHER(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-18) IMAN SHAFIQUEThe topic of young adults who have lost their mother is not heavily researched. The aim of this study was to address this gap by investigating the lived experiences of young adults. Qualitative research methods were used, and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was adopted to maintain the integrity of the participants' own voices. To achieve this, purposive sampling was carried out in Lahore and Islamabad and in-depth interviews were conducted with four participants. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the resulting data, which yielded themes such as challenges, emotional support, gifts and belongings, present stage, relationship with relatives, father, and god, as well as triggering events, coping, strength, and responsibilities. All of these themes provide insight into the lived experiences of young adults who have lost their mother. Losing a parent is always challenging, but the bond between a mother and child is especially unique, making it crucial to explore the experiences of these adults. It will help reduce the stigma of mental illness and will encourage the parents to improve their condition by seeking help from professionals.Item IDENTITY FORMATION IN YOUNG GAY MEN: A NARRATIVE INQUIR(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-06-18) AYESHA RAISexual minorities in Pakistan are largely ignored in research fields. This study aimed to fill this gap by focusing on the narratives of young gay men in Pakistan regarding their identity formation. Qualitative research design and narrative research paradigms were adopted to maintain the integrity of the participants’ own voice. For this purpose, snowball sampling was conducted in Lahore, Pakistan and in depth, unstructured interviews were taken from the four participants. The resulting data was analyzed using thematic narrative analysis and yielded the themes of (a) initial development of identity (sexual assault, gender identity crisis, religious identity crisis, queer trauma), (b) societal implications on identity (sexism, the heteronormative default, sexual and romantic challenges, western queerness) and (c) recognition and integration of identity (I contain multitudes) regarding the identity formation of the young gay men. All these factors and experiences played into their sense of self and the narratives they provided regarding their identity formation. Identity formation is a tumultuous journey for all youths but this is made more difficult for young gay men because of the lack of social support systems in the community. Social awareness and education can provide aid in this regard. More research is required in this aspect for sexual minorities in Pakistan for ignoring someone’s existence does not make them vanish.Item ATTACHMENT STYLES, EXPERIENTIAL AVOIDANCE AND PROBLEMATIC PORNOGRAPHY VIEWING AMONG UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS(KINNAIRD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, 0023-05-18) AYESHA NOORProblematic pornography viewing (PPV) refers to the addictive nature of pornography, which include the consumption of porn in inappropriate settings (such as the workplace), the interpersonal problems associated with porn, and the dysfunctional use of porn to manage one's emotions (Grubbs et al., 2018).
